CRUCIFIED WITH CHRIST... SO WHY ARE YOU STILL TRYING TO DIE?

Christians often say, “You were crucified with Christ,” but then turn around and tell you to crucify yourself again every morning.

Is that what the apostle Paul actually taught?

In this episode of Grace Uncensored, Billy McDonald examines one of Christianity’s most familiar expressions: “You need to die to yourself every day.”

Galatians 2:20 says that you have been crucified with Christ. Romans 6 says that your old self was crucified with Him. Second Corinthians 5 says the old has gone and the new is here.

So why do so many believers spend their lives trying to kill an old self that Scripture says has already died?

We’ll look at the context of Paul’s statement, “I die daily,” and discover why he wasn’t describing a daily spiritual self-crucifixion ritual. He was talking about the physical danger, suffering, and persecution he faced while preaching the gospel.

This episode explores the difference between trying to die for God and believing that you already died with Christ.

You’re not an improved version of the old you.

You’re not a remodeled sinner.

You’re a new creation.

The Christian life isn’t a daily attempt to die. It’s learning to live from the new identity Jesus has already given you.

SCRIPTURES QUOTED AND REFERENCED

Galatians 2:20
Paul declares that he has been crucified with Christ and that Christ now lives in him. This describes a completed union with Christ, not a spiritual death believers must repeatedly perform.

Romans 6:6
Our old self was crucified with Christ so that we would no longer live as slaves to sin. The old self’s crucifixion is presented as an accomplished reality.

Romans 6:11
Believers are told to count themselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Paul isn’t telling us to make ourselves dead. He’s telling us to believe what has already become true.

2 Corinthians 5:17
Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old has gone and the new is here. Salvation doesn’t simply improve the old identity. It gives us an entirely new one.

1 Corinthians 15:30–32
Paul explains that he faced danger and the possibility of physical death every day because of the gospel. His statement about dying daily appears in the context of suffering, danger, and the resurrection of the dead.

Colossians 3:3
The believer has died, and their life is now hidden with Christ in God. Our security and identity are found in our union with Christ.
