Why Grace Triggers Some Christians (What It Reveals About Their Beliefs)
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Why does the message of grace make some Christians angry?
Why does preaching total forgiveness and freedom from the law trigger accusations of “license to sin”?
In this episode of Grace Uncensored, Billy McDonald unpacks why the gospel of grace provokes strong reactions—and how to respond with clarity, confidence, and biblical truth without getting pulled into arguments.
When people hear that all sins were forgiven at the cross, that believers are not under the Law, and that our relationship with God is secure in Christ, it challenges deeply held beliefs about performance, obedience, and control.
But Scripture is clear:
Grace isn’t dangerous.
Grace is God’s power to transform lives.
In this episode, you’ll discover:
• Why grace confronts pride and religious scorekeeping
• Why law-based Christianity feels safer than grace
• What the Bible actually teaches about once-for-all forgiveness
• How to respond to “grace is a license to sin”
• How to stand firm in grace without arguing
If you’ve ever faced pushback for sharing the message of grace, this episode will equip you to respond with peace, confidence, and truth.
Because the gospel isn’t fragile.
It’s powerful.
“The cross took your sins away; the resurrection put His life in.”

Over the past few weeks—I’ve received some fascinating emails and comments.
I love how some of you are making your way through the earlier Grace uncensored podcasts. Someone commented on Episode 13 – “Can I Fall Away From God” and said, “Thank you for explaining it so clearly that our salvation is secured, as it is a covenant between God and Himself (Hebrews 6:13). The covenant is not dependent on us, but on God. It is anchored in Christ’s finished work. And Jesus is called in Hebrews 7:22 “the guarantee of a better covenant”. And nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8). This is good news!
Wow! Preach it! That is incredible news isn’t it? Thank you for joining in and sharing that.
Some listeners say things like:
“Billy, this message finally set me free from years of guilt.”
And then there are the comments that are a little more… intense.
“You’re watering down the gospel.”
“You’re dangerous.”
“You’re just giving people a license to sin.”
Well, If you’ve ever shared the message of God’s limitless, unconditional, grace, you’ve probably heard those kinds of reactions too.
And that raises a real question.
Why does a message that’s supposed to be good news make some people so upset?
Today we’re going to talk about that.
⸻
Let’s start with something important.
Grace doesn’t just forgive us.
Grace exposes the entire system of performance religion.
And when that happens, people get uncomfortable.
Religion loves scorecards.
How often did you pray?
Did you confess enough?
Did you obey enough commands today?
But grace wipes the scorecard away.
Romans 3:27 says, “Where then is boasting? It is excluded.”
Grace removes the one thing human pride depends on—comparison.
Grace levels the playing field. Under the Law, people can compare themselves to others and feel spiritual. But under grace, nobody boasts—because nobody contributed.
Jesus did it all.
Religion says, “Look what I’ve done.”
Grace says, “Look what Christ did.”
And that can be threatening to people who built their identity around spiritual performance.
Another reason grace triggers reactions is because it sounds too simple.
People are used to systems.
Rules feel safe.
But Scripture says something shocking.
Romans 6:14 says, “For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”
Notice what that verse does not say.
It doesn’t say sin loses power when you add more rules.
It says sin loses power when you’re under grace.
Religion says rules control sin.
But Scripture says the opposite.
The Law doesn’t defeat sin.
Grace does.
Paul explains this further in Romans 7:8. He says, “Sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind.”
The Law actually stimulates sin.
Grace retrains the heart.
Titus 2:11–12 says, “For the grace of God has appeared… instructing us to deny ungodliness.”
Grace teaches.
Grace transforms.
Grace empowers.
Law informs you.
Grace transforms you.
Another reason grace triggers pushback is because it dismantles guilt-management religion.
Many believers are stuck in a cycle.
Sin.
Feel guilty.
Confess.
Hope God forgives again.
But the New Covenant says something radical.
Hebrews 10:14 says, “For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.”
And Colossians 2:13 says God has “forgiven us all our transgressions.”
Not some.
All.
The cross didn’t start your forgiveness.
It finished it.
When people hear that forgiveness is once for all, it collapses the system of guilt management they’ve lived under for years.
And that can feel destabilizing.
There’s another reason grace triggers reactions.
Many Christians unknowingly mix the Old Covenant and the New Covenant.
They say we’re saved by grace.
But then they turn around and put believers back under the Law.
But Hebrews 8:13 says, “When He said, ‘A new covenant,’ He has made the first obsolete.”
Obsolete.
Not upgraded.
Not modified.
Finished.
You cannot live under both covenants.
The cross ended one and started the other.
Now let’s talk about some common objections.
One objection comes up constantly.
“You’re giving people a license to sin.”
But Paul already answered that in Romans 6:2 when he said, “How shall we who died to sin still live in it?”
Grace doesn’t encourage sin.
Grace changes identity.
Grace doesn’t excuse sin.
Grace makes you new.
Another objection says, “Forgiveness can’t be total or people will abuse it.”
But forgiveness isn’t based on how people behave.
It’s based on what Jesus accomplished.
Hebrews 10:10 says, “We have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
The cross worked.
It doesn’t need help from your performance.
Another objection says Christians must confess to stay forgiven.
But Ephesians 1:7 says, “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses.”
We have forgiveness.
Present tense.
Christians don’t confess to get forgiven.
We confess because we already are.
Another objection says we still need the Ten Commandments as our guide.
The Law is holy.
But Scripture says something important.
First Timothy 1:9 says, “The law is not made for a righteous person.”
Believers are led by the Spirit.
Galatians 5:18 says, “If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.”
The Law tells you what to do.
The Spirit produces it in you.
Another objection asks, “If we’re already close to God, why pursue holiness?”
Because holiness isn’t a ladder.
It’s identity.
First Corinthians 6:17 says, “The one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him.”
You don’t pursue holiness to get close to God.
You pursue it because you already are.
Now here’s the most important part.
How do we respond when people react negatively to grace?
First, stay anchored in your identity.
Ephesians 1:13–14 says that after believing, “you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise.”
You’re secure.
You don’t argue to belong.
You share grace from confidence.
Second, ask questions instead of arguing.
Ask things like:
“Did the cross actually work?”
Or,
“What do you think keeps people from sin—rules or new life?”
Questions open hearts.
Arguments close them.
Grace persuades.
Law argues.
Third, keep the focus on Jesus.
Not a system.
Not a debate.
Jesus.
The gospel isn’t a philosophy.
It’s a person.
Fourth, share your story.
Tell people how grace freed you from guilt, fear, and condemnation.
People argue with theology.
But stories disarm defenses.
Grace is most powerful when it’s personal.
And remember this.
Pushback doesn’t mean you’re wrong.
Sometimes it means grace is confronting the flesh.
Grace exposes pride.
And pride rarely leaves quietly.
Think of religion like a scorecard.
Every day you’re tallying points.
Did I pray enough?
Did I confess enough?
Did I obey enough?
But Colossians 2:14 says God canceled the record of debt against us.
The scorecard was nailed to the cross.
Grace doesn’t improve your scorecard.
It tears it up.
Or think of it like a glove.
A glove can’t accomplish anything by itself.
But when a hand fills it, suddenly it can move and work.
That’s the Christian life.
Not self-effort.
Christ living in you.
Christianity isn’t self-improvement.
It’s Christ in you.

Grace isn’t dangerous.
Grace is the only thing powerful enough to change the human heart.
Grace will always trigger reactions.
Because grace says something radical.
Your sins are gone.
Your identity is new.
And your life with God isn’t powered by rules.
It’s powered by Christ living in you.
The cross took your sins away.
The resurrection put His life in you.
Grace isn’t a loophole.
Grace is the life of Jesus in you.
And when people push back against grace…
Respond calmly.
Respond kindly.
And keep pointing people back to Jesus.
Because the gospel isn’t fragile.
It’s powerful.
