Jesus Made You a New Creation... But You’re Still a Sinner?

Are Christians still sinners after salvation, or does Jesus actually give believers a new identity in Christ?
 The Bible says your old self was crucified with Christ, you’re sanctified, forgiven, sealed, and a new creation.
 So why do so many Christians still say, “I’m just a sinner saved by grace”?

One of the most familiar phrases in Christianity is also one of the most revealing:

“I’m just a sinner saved by grace.”

It sounds humble.

But does it actually agree with what the New Testament says happened to you when you were saved?

In Episode 58 of Grace Uncensored, Billy McDonald takes on one of Christianity’s most common pieces of Christian Double-Talk.

We say Jesus made us new, but then describe ourselves by the person we used to be.

We say our old self was crucified with Christ, but talk as though he’s still alive and running the show.

We say believers are sanctified, righteous, forgiven, and joined to Christ, but continue calling ourselves sinners.

So which is it?

Did Jesus simply forgive the old you?

Or did He actually change who you are?

This episode explores the important difference between sinning and making sinner your identity.

You’ll discover why knowing who you are in Christ doesn’t minimize sin. It changes how you face temptation, failure, growth, holiness, and your relationship with God.

Grace doesn’t tell you to pretend you never fail.

Grace reminds you that failure doesn’t get to tell you who you are.

Stop calling the new creation by the old creation’s name.

2 Corinthians 5:17
“If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” Salvation isn’t simply improving the old person. In Christ, something genuinely new has happened.

Romans 6:6
Our old self was crucified with Christ so that we would no longer be slaves to sin. Paul points believers back to something that has already happened, not something they must continually accomplish.

2 Timothy 2:13
“If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.” Our security ultimately rests on His faithfulness, not ours.

1 Corinthians 6:17
The one who is joined to the Lord is one with Him in spirit. Our union with Christ is central to understanding our new identity.

1 Corinthians 1:2
Paul calls the Corinthian believers sanctified in Christ and God’s holy people even while addressing serious problems in their behavior. Identity comes before growth.

Titus 2:11-12
Grace teaches believers to say no to ungodliness and live godly lives. Grace isn’t permission to sin. Grace is what trains us.

Hebrews 10:14
By one sacrifice Christ has “made perfect forever” those who are being made holy. Jesus accomplished something complete and permanent through His sacrifice.

1 Timothy 1:13-16
Paul remembers that he had been a blasphemer, persecutor, and violent man and points to the extraordinary mercy Christ showed him. His past magnifies Christ’s mercy rather than becoming the identity every Christian must wear.

Galatians 5:16
“Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” The New Covenant answer to sinful desires is walking by the Spirit, not obsessing over an old identity.

2 Peter 1:3
God has given believers everything they need for life and godliness through knowing Christ. The Christian life flows from what God has already supplied, not from trying to create spiritual life through performance.
